Urban gardening is not just an issue for kinky city residents and tree-huggers - it is an important development in our cities and societies. The first part of the presentation will discuss the function of urban gardening and point out how sustainable development is thwarted by segregating nature and cities. Secondly, we will layout how the philosophy of Rankwerk merges business and sustainability. Finally, we offer hands on urban gardening for beginners, because who will reap must sow. Last year Hannes (M.Sc. Sustainability, Society and the Environment) and Lasse (B.Sc. Architecture) Popken decided to combine their professions and fulfilled their dream of running their own company. Already during their studies, they dealt with the nutrient cycle and ways to close the nutrient loop. This year they took the opportunity founding “Rankwerk” to show how urban gardening supports a sustainable lifestyle.
